Morality and Ethics in Islam

 

Description: The place of morality in Islam and its relation to worship.By Khalid Latif     Islam is a comprehensive way of life, and morality is one of the cornerstones Islam.  Morality is one of the fundamental sources of a nation's strength, just as immorality is one of the main causes of a nation's decline.  Islam has established some universal fundamental rights for humanity as a whole, which are to be observed in all circumstances.  To uphold these rights, Islam has provided not only legal safeguards, but also a very effective moral system.  Thus, whatever leads to the welfare of the individual or the society and does not oppose any maxims of the religion is morally good in Islam, and whatever is harmful is morally bad. Given its importance in a healthy society, Islam supports morality and matters that lead to it, and stands in the way of corruption and matters that lead to it.  The guiding principle for the behavior of a Muslim is "Virtuous Deeds".  This term covers all deeds, not only acts of worship.  The Guardian and Judge of all deeds is God Himself. The most fundamental characteristics of a Muslim are piety and humility.  A Muslim must be humble with God and with other people: "And turn not your face away from people (with pride), nor walk in insolence through the earth.  Verily, God likes not each arrogant boaster.  And be moderate (or show no insolence) in your walking, and lower your voice.  Verily, the harshest of all voices is the voice (braying) of the ass."  (Quran 31:18-19) Muslims must be in controls of their passions and desires. A Muslim should not be vain or attached to the ephemeral pleasures of this world. While most people allow the material world to fill their hearts, Muslims should keep God in their hearts and the material world in their hand.  Instead of being attached to the car and the job and the diploma and the bank account, all these things become tools to make us better people. "The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail, but only he (will prosper) that brings to God a sound heart." (Quran: 26:88-89) Principles of Morality in Islam God sums up righteousness in verse 177 of Surat Al Baqarah: "It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards East or West; but it is righteousness (the quality of ) the one who believes in God and the Last Day and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; who spends of his wealth, in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, to the needy, to the wayfarer, to those who ask and for the freeing of slaves; and who is steadfast in prayers, and gives Zakah (Alms); and those who fulfill their covenants which they made; and who are patient and perseverant in poverty and ailment and throughout all periods of fighting.  Such are the people of truth, the pious." This verse teaches us that righteousness and piety is based before all else on a true and sincere faith.  The key to virtue and good conduct is a strong relation with God, who sees all, at all times and everywhere.  He knows the secrets of the hearts and the intentions behind all actions.  Therefore, a Muslim must be moral in all circumstances; God is aware of each one when no one else is.  If we deceive everyone, we cannot deceive Him.  We can flee from anyone, but not from Him.  The love and continuous awareness of God and the Day of Judgment enables man to be  moral in conduct and sincere in intentions, with devotion and dedication: "Indeed, the most honorable among you in the sight of God is the most pious." (Quran 49:13) Then come deeds of charity to others, especially giving things we love. This, like acts of worship, prayers and Zakah (mandatory alms), is an integral part of worship.  A righteous person must be reliable and trustworthy. Finally, their faith must be firm and should not wane when faced with adversity.  Morality must be strong to vanquish corruption: "And God loves those who are firm and steadfast."  Patience is often hardest and most beautiful when it's against one's own desires or anger: "And march forth toward forgiveness from your Lord, and for Paradise as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for the pious.  Those who spend (in the way of God) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon people; verily, God loves the doers of the good deeds."  (Quran 3:133) These three acts are among the hardest things for most people, but they are also the key to forgiveness  and to paradise.  Are they not the best, those who are able to exercise charity when they are in need themselves, control when they are angry and forgiveness when they are wronged? This is the standard by which actions are judged as good or bad.  By making pleasing God the objective of every Muslim, Islam has set the highest possible standard of morality. Morality in Islam addresses every aspect of a Muslim's life, from greetings to international relations.  It is universal in its scope and in its applicability.  Morality reigns in selfish desires, vanity and bad habits.  Muslims must not only be virtuous, but they must also enjoin virtue.  They must not only refrain from evil and vice, but they must also forbid them.  In other words, they must not only be morally healthy, but they must also contribute to the moral health of society as a whole. "You are the best of the nations raised up for (the benefit of) men; you enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong and believe in God; and if the followers of the Book had believed it would have been better for them; of them (some) are believers and most of them are transgressors." Indian Media Revealed that the Trophy Given to Indian team after winning ICC World Cup 2011 was fake.This Trophy was not Original from ICC but it was fake without any Logo of ICC.

Today Indian Media claimed that the Trophy given to Indina winninng team in a ceremony was fake and they revealed that ICC must give the Original Trophy ti Indian Team. However the trophy was a fake one as it had no ICC Logo nor the any name of the winning Team.

The Indian Media Further said that the Original Trophy was in the Custody of the Mumbai Custom who levied a Tax of Rs 2.2 million on it.But ICC in a bid to avoid any Tax gave away the Fake trophy to Indian Team after Winning the Final of Cricket World Cup 2011.

What Good is Salat?

In one of his circulars Sayyidna Umar ibn Khattab, Radi-Allahu anhu, sent instructions to all his administrators saying, "In my opinion, salat (Islam's prescribed act of worship or prayer. The word prayer, though, is also used for supplication or dua and is therefore avoided in this article.) is the most important of your obligations. Whoever takes good care of it and safeguards it safeguards his religion and whoever neglects it will neglect other things even more." He then added instructions about the times for the five salats and admonition against dozing off before Isha. [Muwatta Imam Malik. Hadith No. 5]
This letter from the ruler of a vast empire to the officials of his government --- shall we call it Executive Order? --- gives us a lot to reflect upon. For salat is among the most emphasized commands in Shariah. Unfortunately it is also a grossly neglected obligation in our life today.
Even a Muslim school child knows that salat is a pillar of Islam. What Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, expressed was that it is true at all levels and in all settings, from the private to the public. One cannot build an Islamic life, an Islamic community, an Islamic institution, or an Islamic government while neglecting or weakening this pillar. It is a measure of its extraordinary status that unlike all other obligations the command for salat was given by Allah Most High to Prophet Muhammad during his miraculous Ascent to Heaven or Meraj. Very fittingly so, for salat is the meraj of the believer. One begins the salat by standing while facing the Ka'ba or the House of Allah, isolating himself from the worldly affairs, and then addressing Allah directly: "Oh Allah, You are sanctified and (I begin) with Your praise. Your name is Blessed and Your Greatness is Supreme. And no one else is worthy of worship except You." During salat a believer repeatedly stands, bows, and prostates to Allah. Each of these acts brings him closer and closer to his Master and Creator filling him with the feelings of love, devotion, and obedience. The sitting position even includes the re-creation of the conversation that took place between the Prophet and Allah during the Heavenly Ascent.
Prophet : "All greetings, blessings, and good acts are for Allah."
Allah: "Peace is upon you oh Prophet, and the Mercy, and the Blessings of Allah."
"Peace be with us and unto the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah."
"And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger."
This closeness is the most valuable gift for the believer. It is the source of all strength and all goodness in his life. It is the light that shows him the right from wrong in all walks of life. It is the river that bathes and cleans him of all sin and contamination. In the hardships of life, it is the source of solace and strength. It is the regulator of the Muslim life, the daily schedule of a believer being built around the five daily salats. It is a source of joy and happiness, of spiritual nourishment and purification. It is the key to all success. It is the key to paradise.
On the other hand, neglecting the salat is key to hell. Qur'an says, "Woe to the worshippers who are negligent in their salat." Hadith says: "Salat stands between man and unbelief." Another hadith says: "Salat is the pillar of religion. Whoever destroys it has destroyed the religion." Another hadith informs us that salat is the first item about which one will be questioned after death. The person who succeeds in this test, will likely pass through the subsequent tests. The one who flunks this one has little chance of getting through the rest. Yet another hadith warns us that the person who neglects his salat has walked out of the protection of Allah. We can understand the enormity of missing just one salat on purpose from the hadith that says that such a person is like one who lost all his family and all his wealth!
In the presence of all the persuasion and all the admonition about salat in Qur'an and hadith, one wonders how could any sane believer be negligent in this matter. To a person who claims to be a believer yet does not offer his salat regularly five times a day, we must ask: What is your justification? The more one thinks about it the more he or she will realize that there is none. Absolutely none.

Hows Your Vision?

 

One woman laughs about the time she took her 14-year-old daughter and Her daughter's best friend to a Peter, Paul and Mary concert. Maybe I should be more concerned With my vision than with my eyesight. There are numerous stories of people who lacked vision. A Hollywood Producer scrawled a curt rejection note on a manuscript that became "Gone With The Wind." He had no vision for the success that movie Would enjoy. Orville and Wilbur Wright felt excited. On December 17, 1903, they Had finally succeeded in keeping their homemade airplane in the air For 59 seconds. Immediately, they rushed a telegram to their sister In Dayton, Ohio, telling of this great accomplishment. The telegram Read, "First sustained flight today fifty-nine seconds. Hope to be Home by Christmas." Upon receiving the news of the successful flight, their sister was so Excited that she rushed to the newspaper office and gave the telegram To the editor. The next morning the newspaper headed the story: "Popular Local Bicycle Merchants To Be Home For Holidays." The hapless Editor saw what was obvious, but missed the real story. Vision is never about seeing the obvious. It's about looking ahead; About seeing what is not there -- YET. It's often about seeing the Potential behind the obvious. Like the potential in people. Spotting the potential for success in a Student who, as is obvious to everyone else, will likely fail. Or recognizing the potential for something good to come from a Situation others are writing off as lost. If we want to see what is really going on, we will need to learn to Spot what is not there, then act on it. So...
