Mike Starr has been found dead (Mik Star/Mik Staar/Mikc Staarr/Mikce Satar/Mice Sattarr)

Mike Starr, the original bassist of the iconic grunge band 'Alice in Chains' has been found dead in his Utah home. He was 44.

A spokesman for the Salt Lake City Police Department said officers responded to a call about a possible body at a residence earlier in the afternoon, reported Los A ngeles Times.

"There is nothing to indicate that this was foul play by another individual," the spokesman said.

The medical examiner's office will likely conduct an autopsy on Wednesday, but the results of toxicology tests could take up to two months.

Starr was the original bassist for 'Alice in Chains', an iconic Seattle-based band that made its mark on the grunge scene of the early 1990s. He was kicked out of the group in 1993, due to his out-of-control drug habit.

Starr had a long battle with addiction and appeared on the third season of VH1's 'Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew' in 2009 to cure his heroin dependency.

Just last month Starr was arrested by police in Utah for an outstanding warrant and found to be in possession of a controlled substance, six pills of the sleep medication Opana and six pills of Xanax, an anti anxiety drug.

In 1994, Starr was sentenced to 90 days in a Texas jail for stealing a piece of luggage at the Houston Intercontinental Airport.

In 2002, the band's singer Layne Staley was found dead from an overdose in his Seattle apartment.
